Organization

In a healthy organization, employees and supervisors have the same goals, and everyone enjoys a feeling of inclusion and participation. Ideally, managers in a well-run organization listen to the ideas put forth by subordinates. By paying attention to signs of a superior organizational culture, an organization can stay on track and accomplish its mission.

A good organizational structure should focus in the following topics: Emphasis on Purpose, Happy Employees, Effective Leadership Style, Adaptability, Realism.

A good organization has a clearly defined purpose and cultivates the attitude that purpose is more important than process. Another sign of a good organization is the happiness or fulfilment of the employees and an absence of fear.

There are a number of leadership styles that work, as well as some that don't. The authoritarian leader who exercises power over subordinates just for the sake of it undermines the system. Effective leaders are able to create a team and encourage employees to pool their talents and come up with creative solutions. Supervisors might act as coaches by allowing employees to work on their own but making themselves available to help should a difficult situation arise.

To compete effectively, organizations must be adaptable to a changing environment. The organization has to be capable of seizing an opportunity and dealing with unexpected problems.

Another sign of a good organization is that it's realistic. A successful organization is able to analyse data and make adjustments accordingly, as opposed to giving a glowing report when times are tough.

Ethics in companies

Lilii Reitblat, our Organizational and Ethics consultant.

Whenever a board of directors needs to take any action, its individual members face a decision: what is the right thing to do? Most of the time, choosing the right course is a matter of business judgment on what ethicists call non-moral issues.

In a few instances, the choice is a narrow, legal one, where compliance with specific statute or regulation is at stake. But in some cases – and in particular for major decisions like mergers, acquisitions, down-sizing or large investments – neither the law nor business judgment may be sufficiently clear. These decisions often involve conflicting versions of what's right in amoral sense.

Important decision-making in the boardroom is, in short, a matter of ethics. While directors will choose to act on individual decisions from different theoretical perspectives, their tough calls are likely to be based on more fundamental and often unspoken assumptions about the nature of what is right. The lobby for ethical investment brings with it similarly unspoken assumptions about the ethical basis on which its recommendations are made.
